Benefits of a Hybrid Work Environment

As the COVID pandemic begins to become a part of the past, it seems that a hybrid work model is something that is here to stay. As this has been a huge change in the workforce, people are beginning to adapt to, and may even prefer, some days spent working from the comfort of their home. As the hybrid work model remains prominent, many benefits have emerged as a result.



1. Avoiding the Daily, Time-Consuming Commute

Time spent traveling from home to the office varies from person to person. Regardless, this time spent on the bus or train is time that could be productively used by employees. An employee who spends thirty minutes per day going to and from the office will spend roughly 125 hours per year commuting. This time can be spent to increase productivity, but there is more than just one use for this additional time. Employees can focus on themselves, ensuring that they have the time to get a well-balanced breakfast in or get outside in the morning for a quick jog.


2. Increased Flexibility in Schedule

Working from home creates a more flexible schedule for employees in their day-to-day lives. For instance, one could swing by their local gym during their lunch break rather than needing to stay within the office. Relating back to commuting, employees can use this saved time after work to enjoy hobbies that they love and free their schedule at home. Finally, breaks at home can be used to perform tasks around the house that may otherwise not get done as promptly, like dishes or laundry.


3. Maintaining Collaboration and Camaraderie

Maintaining time in the office brings many benefits to employees and teams as well. Some aspects of a job cannot be replaced, including face-to-face meetings with co-workers or clients. Being able to directly communicate with others promotes more efficient and collaborative meetings, as employees may feel more comfortable to bring up certain topics or ask additional questions.


To pair with increased collaboration, a company’s camaraderie is something that cannot be replaced in a virtual setting. Every company has their own culture, which is built by in-person interactions within the workspace. Something as simple as a team lunch during the day can create a bond that is difficult to obtain over a virtual call. Working alongside others can also remind employees of a purpose, as they are reassured of a common goal. These things may not be measurable but are definitely prominent throughout every company.


4. Reduced Stress

Employees working in a comfortable environment can dramatically reduce the amount of day-to-day stress imposed on them. Sometimes, a non-formal environment can take thoughts away from stress and focus them into the work being performed. Increased amounts of sleep keep employees sharp, and this paired with low stress levels makes a good formula for efficient work. There are benefits of being in the office, but periodic relaxed work environments will increase employee satisfaction over time.


5. Reduced Expenses

Conducting a hybrid work model and financially benefit employees in a few different ways. Public transportation costs can add up, especially when using public transportation twice per day. Additionally, not everyone can fit meal prep into their morning routine. The cost of purchasing food when in the office can be reallocated to spend on groceries kept at the house or other essential needs. A third reduced expense for employees with children would be the saved cost of childcare. Many parents need to pay for childcare while they are in the office, and being able to stay home a few days a week can save plenty of extra cash.
